Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site

Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site, about 2 miles South of Petersburg and about 20 miles Northwest of Springfield, is a reconstruction of the village where Abraham Lincoln spent his early adulthood.

Hours of Operation
March 1 - April 15: Open Wednesday - Sunday 9am - 5pm (Closed Mon & Tue)
April 16 - Labor Day: Open 7 days a week 9am – 5pm
Day after Labor Day - October 31: Open Wednesday - Sunday 9am - 5pm (Closed Mon & Tue)
November 1 - End of February: Open Wednesday - Sunday 8am - 4pm (Closed Mon & Tue)

2 miles south of Petersburg, IL, on Rt. 97 or 20 miles northwest of Springfield, IL, on Rt. 97.

Size
Approximately 700 acres.

Admission
No admission fee, just a suggested donation of $2.00 for children, $4.00 for adults, or $10.00 for a family.

School Tours
Groups of 15 or more should arrange for a reservation with the Springfield Convention & Visitors Bureau at 1-800-545-7300 or by accessing the SCVB website at www.visit-springfieldillinois.com and going to "Group Tours" and choosing the "School/Youth tour" option for a Reservation Form or to make Reservations online.

Adult Groups
Groups of 15 or more should arrange for a reservation with the Springfield Convention & Visitors Bureau at 1-800-545-7300 or by accessing the SCVB website at www.visit-springfieldillinois.com and going to "Group Tours" and choosing the "Adult tour" option for a Reservation Form or to make Reservations online.

Picnicking
One shelterhouse in picnic area; shelter and tables on first-come basis.
Three shelterhouses down by Sangamon River; $25 fee per shelterhouse per day. Reservations can be made in person or by mail.

Trails
Several hiking trails totaling 10 Kilometers are available at the historic site.

All tours are self-guided.

Camping
200 sites, of which 100 have electricity. Maximum stay is 14 nights. NO reservations accepted. More camping information.
