Carbondale is an exciting community located just a few miles from the Shawnee National Forest. It is the home of Southern Illinois University and, as a result, boasts plenty of cultural activities and exciting university sports. The community has a fantastic shopping mall and retail establishments, well-groomed historic neighborhoods, and beautiful parks and gardens. Carbondale’s nostalgic downtown focuses on the community’s railroad heritage, and features a restored passenger depot, train cars, a downtown park and a unique historic pavilion. While the community has a strong link to history, its heritage is best known through Woodlawn Cemetery, the probable location of the nation’s first Memorial Day observance.

You're invited! Come and experience the scenic back roads where Abraham Lincoln first set foot in Illinois, which is now known as the Land of Lincoln.

Southeastern Illinois consists of nine counties made up of: Clay, Crawford, Edwards, Jasper, Lawrence, Richland, Wabash, Wayne and White. Although we may be largely by-passed when it comes to roaring interstates we are still an easy destination. Traffic jams are unheard of, the air is clean and the birds can be heard singing.

The region is located just 90 miles East of St. Louis and 240 miles South of Chicago along the Indiana boarder on the Wabash River. Our small towns preserve the days of yesteryear with quaint downtown store fronts that boast antique shopping opportunities, museums, railroad depots and many unique restaurants. Travel the Southeastern Illinois Wine Trail and sample quality wines from our five wineries, all within a 45 mile radius.

The area is a sportsman's paradise with many State Parks, Nature Preserves with ample opportunities for hunting, fishing, hiking, and camping. Areas of specialty are: sky diving, sail plane rides and even car race driving. There are many golf courses throughout the area.

Welcome to Williamson County, one of Southern Illinois' most beautiful communities. Williamson County was established as an official county in 1839, and received its name from the settlers who came from Williamson County, Tennessee. This area was known for the tall grass species that grew here, which provided food for an abundance of game like elk, buffalo, bear, wolves and upland game birds. Williamson County has had several books written about its history, spanning from pioneer times to present-day residents and events. Today, visitors can experience the Illinois Centre Mall in Marion, which is one of the largest malls in Southern Illinois. Shoppers can also browse strip malls, variety stores, main street shopping areas and a downtown square. Williamson County has the largest selection of individual antiques stores in Southern Illinois.
